The best part of our work is learning new things and using the knowledge we have to create something different. In recent months, we worked on further developing our plate reader platform, but we switched tasks for a time from serious hands-on work to creative planning. From the plate reader world, we moved to a point-of-care (POC) setup. Time-resolved fluorescence (TRF) was retained, but with a twist. We decided to create a project plan and conduct a feasibility study for a customer that had developed its own measurement technology.

Labmaster Ltd. has developed its proprietary cathodic electro-chemiluminescence (CECL) technology, which utilizes the time-resolved (TRF) measurement principles, but the excitation of the sample is accomplished with an electrical pulse instead of light! The video at http://www.labmaster.fi/ demonstrates the general measurement principle. In addition, instead of being used in a central laboratory, this equipment is intended for use in close proximity to the patient.
In the project, we were able to utilize the skills we know best: designing instruments that will address the customer’s needs. Labmaster’s current device has proven that a very sensitive CECL instrument can be created; it has been successfully tested in laboratory conditions, but miniaturization of the instrument is needed to fulfill the current requirements for a POCT device. In this project, special emphasis was placed on developing the new measurement process so that no user intervention is needed after adding the sample to the measurement cartridge. Emphasis was also placed designing the device and cartridge in a way that would support serial production in a later state.Together we prepared the concept and project plan. We also found potential partner candidates for cartridge manufacturing.
